Weston has a life shortening disability. Called Friedreich's Ataxia!
What is Friedreich ataxia? Friedreich ataxia
(also called FA) is a rare disease that causes
progressive nervous system damage along
with other organs and movement problems. It damages the spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and the cerebellum portion of the brain. It usually begins in childhood and leads to
impaired muscle coordination (ataxia) that
worsens over time. As the disease progresses, it often leads to scoliosis, foot deformities, decreased lung function, slurred speech, hearing loss, and vision problems can occur. And depression. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among people with FA. FA can't be cured at this time.
One doctors told him he wouldn't live to see his 18th birthday. I told him that doctors are only practicing medicine, they don't have all the answers. And there isn't an expiration date on the bottom of his foot. So let's make a bucket list of smiles!!! Weston wants to see the Grand Canyon. He wants to sky dive for his 18th birthday. He wants a margarita party for his 21st birthday. Awesome! This Mamma is going to make the most out of it. I found some wonderful companies to assist with this dream. They are assisting with costs as best they can. Here is what I am planning: the van has rust, so a shop is cutting some sections off and fabricating new section panels, prepping the whole van for paint, new paint, fuel and trip to the Grand Canyon. He has good days and bad days but he is progressively getting worse. I just want to see his wonderful smile!
