Build A Septic Tank For Sujeth's Family

Since 2019, Sri Lanka has been suffering from one of the worst economic crises in its history, resulting in unprecedented levels of inflation, shortages of medical supplies, and an increase in the price of basic goods. Many families are forced to choose between feeding their families or sending their children to school.

In Weligama (a town in South West Sri Lanka), Sujeth works as a fisherman whilst his wife, Disna, takes care of their three children - Gadane (aged 13), Eruksha (aged 6) and Konidu (aged 3) - as well as their newborn baby. As climate change affects the fishing activity in Weligama, Sujeth and his family have no regular income. They are now sharing the family house with 10 members of Sujeth’s family, including his father’s and sister’s family.

To have more independence, they started to build their own house in 2019. Their already small funding was aggravated by the pandemic, stopping them from finishing the work and moving in.

Sujeth and Disna reached out to the Savi Jaya foundation and its volunteers to help them to raise the money to complete the house. The Savi Jaya Foundation was created in 2010 to help to reduce social inequality in the Weligama area by supporting students and children’s education through school supplies donation. Since the economic crisis began, they have extended their mission to help give those in need access to basic commodities.

As part of my short, two-week stint volunteering at the Savi Jaya Foundation, I have set myself the target of fundraising £150. I would be extremely grateful to anyone who can donate. If enough people donate a small amount each, £150 can be reached so easily!

Your donation will help to build the house’s septic tank and toilet, ensuring safe sanitation for the house. The next stage will is building a wall outside of the property, and finally buying any remaining materials to finish the house.
