ABOUT US
The journey so far:
The project started as a dream four years ago. Its founders aimed to create the perfect natural oasis, where people could live in community and in harmony with nature.
Along these years, and with the invaluable help of hundreds of volunteers who shared the same dream, we built Gaarawé’s basic infrastructure: its internal road, electric lines, a water system, several vegetable gardens, a full kitchen, seven bamboo huts, a common area and a chicken farm.
The journey’s been tough at times, but we’re strong and still excited to keep working in our way to self-sustainability.
The future:
We aim to establish a self-sustainable community, maximizing our production of basic goods and minimizing the external purchases. And in order to achieve this, there’s a long way to go. We still need to produce our own energy, purify our water and produce 100% of the food we eat.
On the other hand, our seven huts were meant to be temporary settlements to accommodate the village’s first inhabitants. At this point, we need to replace them with stronger houses, made of natural clay. At the same time, other structures of the village start getting old and need maintenance and repairs. For the future, we have many great ideas to get some profit from our organic garden: from selling a diversified amount of vegetables and fruits, and trees from our nursery, to essential oils made from herbs we also find here. However, until now we were able to support the basic expenses from our community living, as well as the construction of the village, with the help of volunteers and donations from some supporters.
That is why we’re looking for dreamers like us who wish to experience true contact with nature while working for the common goal of sustaining this oasis. We are 100% sure we have all the resources needed in order to achieve our mission, but we need more people interested to join and work with us on a long-term.
What we need:
We started a project with an incredible architect, Stefano La Rocca (www.lacasasullalbero.it), to build a tree house in our garden. First of all because, like him, we believe that it's a type of accomodation that allows the human being to be in harmony with nature in a deeper and meaningful way. Then, it gives our community the opportunity to receive guests and make some profit, in order to keep working for our community dream! And who knows, it can be the first one of a future tree house's village...
The impact of our project:
Nowadays, as everyone is aware of it, the world is suffering with a big environmental crisis and action is need immediately. That's why our community proposes the preservation of an area, which is one the few lasts where Nature is still not affected so badly, and has a big importance due to it's biodiversity richness. In the forest of Khao Sok we find great quality air and water, several species of animals that only habit where there are these conditions and other incredible natural resources.
Also, our main activity is taking care of our garden, which includes multiplying the species of edible plants and fruits being produced here, without any chemicals, as well as preserve their seeds, creating a bank for this effect. We truly believe that in the future, this may be a very important need for the humanity.
