Build the Future for Chora Students
Donation protected
Dear Donors,
This very school which I want to help rebuild is the same school I went to 10 years ago before I moved to the U.S. This school has been the only primary school in my home city of Chora, Ethiopia for the past 60 years. The school has never, ever been remodeled or had maintenance since then, but now it is crumbling, slowly day by day. The classroom which is supposed to hold 30 to 40 students, now holds 60 to 70+ students. Many students sit on the floor because lack of chairs and tables and even the prevailing chairs are in very poor condition and not suitable enough to be used anymore.
Students don’t have access to clean water to drink and proper sanitation. The restrooms have no doors or stalls nor are they connected to a sewage system so all the human waste sits and doesn’t move. They also don’t have access to electricity so they freeze in the winter and soak in their sweat in the summer. The students dream of having a library but the school can’t afford it. They don’t have books or pens so they beg passersby to help them get one. In this situation, girls are at a disadvantage because they are socially stigmatized if they beg unlike their peer boys and in effect, most of them drop out.
Teachers don’t have proper classrooms in which they can teach nor do they have the resources to provide high-quality education for their students. This school is attended by students who are stricken with poverty and with no one to help them. Majority of them commute 2 to 3 hours every day from the countryside to attend this school.
So, please help me build and equip the school with resources and with new infrastructure. Help me, help them to provide high-quality education and make an impact on their future.
Sincerely,
Adnan, and the students of Chora Academy
