Building a science classroom in South Africa

Dear Supporters,

We are Human Rights Youth Advocacy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States. Our team, consisting of more than 600 volunteers, has made a significant impact, helping thousands of communities across the globe in areas of health, education, and equality. Today, we are sharing the story of Bulungula, a school in South Africa running solely on donations. We hope to equip the science lab at Bulungula with lab equipments that will further enhance the education for their students, and to create more learning opportunities for students at Bulungula.

Bulungula College, situated in an underserved area of South Africa, has made incredible progress in constructing additional classrooms to enhance their students’ education through the Incubator Project. Recently, they have successfully built a new school building, demonstrating their commitment to providing an improved environment for students. Now, we are on the cusp of creating a fully equipped science lab that will greatly advance the student’s understanding of science to become the next generation of scientists and innovators.

The Incubator Project traces back to 2007, but their goal has always remained the same - to support rural communities in Africa through providing educational opportunities to students. Their programs have achieved significant progress in multiple areas such as health and education.
For example, they provided essential care for pregnant mothers and necessary materials for newborn babies to ensure their safety. The program also provides early childhood care for ages 0 to 3 that assist households in raising a child as well as incorporating online learning and after school programs for kids so that children can receive better education, helping each student to have a chance at completing higher education. Lastly, they provide unemployed youth training and resources to be able to sustain themselves.

However, approximately 95% of the students still do not ever complete Grade 12. Only a handful of people have ever succeeded in achieving their final school year certificate, so it is clear that there is a gap in the offerings of the Bulungula Incubator for high school students; therefore, the Incubator Project is aiming to create a fully equipped science lab for students this year. With your help, the new science lab at Bulungula could include basic equipment such as microscopes, pH papers, glassware, and other safety equipments!

Therefore, your involvement is crucial to our mission to create lasting change. Your contribution, no matter big or small, can directly impact the quality of the learning environment for all students of Bulungula. Through our collective action and dedication, these students will be able to take their knowledge from classrooms and apply to laboratory work, and a sense of curiosity in science will be cultivated among the students! Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who matter.
