Building Community at the Parktown Food Hub

I am Devak Shah Coltrane, a Scout with Troop 451 in Durham, North Carolina, working towards my Eagle Scout Service Project. For my project, I am helping the Parktown Food Hub by increasing its mission of building community, sharing food, and preventing waste.

I am building a 17ftx18ft stone patio with benches which will help them bring more people into their ever-growing community. They often do classes and potlucks outside to support and educate the community, but their meeting area often gets very wet due to rain. The patio will help allow them to continue to have their events in a better environment. I will also be building a garden box out of a shipping crate they already had which is helping them to prevent waste by finding new purposes for old resources and giving them one more garden box to grow food and teach others how to garden. Lastly, I will be lining an existing garden “lasagna” bed on the ground, which will help maintain the garden bed and prevent grass and weeds into the bed, allowing the plants to grow better and allowing the Parktown Food Hub to share more food with those in need. Your donations will go towards all the supplies and materials needed for the project, such as pavers and wood. Any extra funds will go back to the Food Hub as a donation. Thank you for considering.
