Build Philly Peace Plaza

Philadelphia Peace Plaza memorializes over 200,000 girls and women from Asia and Oceania who were removed from their homes and coerced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Armed Forces of Japan between 1932 and 1945. Kim Hak-soon was the first survivor to come forward publicly in 1991, giving courage to other survivors who followed suit and joined the campaign to recognize and stop sexual violence, and making the world listen and believe. 

This initially inspired the members of Korean community in the Philadelphia area and has since grown to a diverse group of people working to build the world’s first public space dedicated to those perished and surviving women, with the Statue of Peace at its center. Created by Seokyung and Unsung Kim in 2011, the replicas of the statue have been installed in 12 global locations outside South Korea. 

To be located at 805 S Front St in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood, within walking distance of the Independence Hall and the Vietnam War Memorial at the Foglietta Plaza, this project obtained unanimous approval of the Philadelphia Art Commission on July 7th, 2023. This project welcomes multi-generations of Philadelphians and visitors alike to reflect on and to change the pattern of inequity and violence around them. 

This portion of the grassroots fundraising will go toward our total goal of $500,000.

소녀상 공원은 1932년부터 1945년까지 일본 제국 군대에 의해 성노예를 강요당했던 20만 명 이상의 아시아와 오세아니아 출신 소녀와 여성, 그리고 그 역사의 증인으로 나선 생존자들을 기립니다. 1991년 김학순 할머니의 증언을 시점으로 생존자들의 인권 운동이 세계를 깨웠습니다. 

역사의 반복을 막기 위한 생존자들의 용기에 영감을 받은 필라델피아 지역 한인사회 구성원들로 시작했지만 다민족이 함께하면서 성장한 이 사업은 김서경, 김은성 조각가가 2011년 창작한 ‘평화의 소녀상’ (Statue of Peace)을 예술작품으로 선정하고 그것을 중심으로 만들어진 소녀상 공원을 설립하기로 뜻을 모았습니다. 

미국 독립 기념관과 포글리에타 공원에 설립된 한국전쟁 참여 기념비에서 가까운 퀸빌리지 (Queen Village)에 있는 부지를 소녀상 공원 자리로 선택했고 2023년 7월 7일에 열린 공청회에서 필라델피아 시 예술위원회는 만장일치의 표결로 승인을 내렸습니다. 세계 최초로 설립되는 소녀상 공원은 필라델피아 다세대 시민과 세계 방문자들에게 우리 주변의 불의와 폭력을 성찰하고 치유와 평화로 바꾸어 나가자는 초대장입니다. 이 풀뿌리 모금 운동은 전체 모금달성 $500,000의 일부가 될것입니다.
