Extreme poverty leads to hunger in Africa:

More than a quarter of the hungry in the world live on the African continent.

One fifth of people living in Africa are considered malnourished.

This gives the continent the highest rate of malnourished people worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest infant mortality.

On average, one in 11 children dies before his fifth birthday. More than 30 percent of African children suffer from growth disorders such as stunting due to their chronic malnutrition. This disease causes a physical and mental underdevelopment in children.

The reasons for the poverty is vast but what stands out the most for me is unjust and corrupt trade structures & infrastructure issues.

This fundraiser is to assist the registered Bukaye Children’s Orphanage in the very rural region of the Bugiri District in Uganda to become sustainable.

Over the past months during COVID-19 they have been heavily impacted where all funding has halted.

Approximately £3200 has been donated to them already to help with rent of the orphanage, food, firewood, clean water, soap, toothpaste, sanitary towels and more.

In our bid to make them sustainable in part of this funding we provided a 5000 Ltr water tank so that they would no longer need to buy water, but would have clean water for cooking, drinking and washing.

We also covered their rent up until December 2020.

This is not sustainable and so we want to buy their building, the cost is £5000.00

We also want to build a chicken farm which will help for them to sell chickens, eggs, and develop a sustainable business which will help them pay for food. The cost to develop this is approximately £4500

We also want to provide solar lanterns for the children so that they do not need to buy dangerous kerosene for the children, my company Gennex will commit to donating these, however we need the shipping costs to package them and ship from our storage in Kenya approximately £140 to ship 35 solar lanterns.

There are other needs such as new furniture, new bed mattresses, new blankets, clothes and shoes for the children. We estimate a budget of £2000.00

The orphanage currently houses 33 children between the age of 2 and 17 and has been operating since 2016 with food, supplies and clean water provided through funding.

The orphanage was started by Erdine Lee who himself used to be an orphan and is run with the coordinator Kyotalimye Brenda and some widows who volunteer with cooking and support for the younger children.

As mentioned before they currently rent the building they are in for 350,000 Ugandan Shillings which is around 95USD a month which often times leaves them with very little to NO FOOD for the orphans.

The orphanage really needs help so I’m reaching out to my community so that more can be done.

I am proposing this project is delivered in 7 phases:

Phase 1: Contribution fund for regular monthly donation to support with food, sanitary towels, soap, firewood, rent.

Phase 2: Shipping Solar lanterns, shipping of clothes and shoes

Phase 3: Building of Chicken Farm (Sub-Phases , Cost )

Phase 4: Purchase of Building

Phase 5: Purchase of new mattresses & bed sheets

Phase 6: Purchase of new furniture

Phase 7: Bore Hole for more water and development of agriculture for fresh vegetables.

The orphanage is Registered officially with the Bigiri District Local Government Department of Community Development.
