Bunjum Yan ga gadjang guygam - Travel the Sand
Follow Mark Roberts, Ian Roberts and Marshal Douglas as they travel by sand to raise awareness of domestic violence and raise vital funds for Bunjum Transition House.
In mid January 2020 they will be riding bicycles unsupported for 800km along all the beaches from Newcastle to Tweed Heads. They know it will be a tough ride but nothing compared to what those who need Bunjum Transition House experience every day.
We need your support to help Bunjum and Aunty Nancy continue their great work. Please dig deep and make a donation and share this page. Then start a conversation.
Bunjum Transition House
Do you want to assist Aboriginal women and children to escape domestic violence?
Domestic violence is a major issue in Australia, in both white and Aboriginal communities. Bunjum, an Aboriginal organisation based in Ballina in Northern NSW, has initiated a project for a transition house for Aboriginal women who are fleeing a violent relationship, and it needs your help.
What is Bunjum Transition House?
The Bunjum Transition House provides short term accommodation for women and children to give them time to breathe, have their children settle at school and to begin to look for housing, which in Ballina and surrounds is very expensive and difficult to access. Bunjum Transition House is a two bedroom house that provides a safe and secure environment for our most vulnerable people. The house belongs to Bunjum Aboriginal Corporation and has generously been set aside by the board as a safe space for women and their children escaping domestic violence.
The project also offers to help the healing process by having Yarning Groups, facilitated by a local Bundjalung elder. “In these groups we discuss the importance of self-care, help with looking for housing, the cycle of violence, overcoming grief and moving forward.”
Why does Bunjum Transition House need your help?
The project does not receive any Government funding, so relies on local community support in the form of donations. The tenants assist with the costs of Bunjum Transition House by paying a small rent and their electricity costs. The financial support from the community has been wonderful and greatly appreciated but it is not enough to allow Bunjum to continue to provide a vital service.
Bunjum has managed to acquire some basic furniture including beds and linen but needs to fund the purchase of household items such as white goods, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery as well as the cost of maintenance and repairs, such as the internal painting that is currently being undertaken. Bunjum also provides financial assistance to help the women and their children secure and set up their new home and to ensure the kids have any necessary school equipment. Although tenants contribute to the ongoing cost of Bunjum Transition House it is not enough to keep the facility running and available to women in need.
Here’s your opportunity
To raise awareness of domestic violence and to raise vital funds for Bunjum we are riding bicycles up a large part of the east coast of Australia. This is a ride with a difference. We will be riding unsupported along all the beaches from Newcastle to the Tweed Heads. There are areas where we will have to ride around headlands and cross a few rivers but we will try to keep it on the sand as much as possible. The distance is approximately 800 kilometres and we hope to complete it in 10 days. We know it will be a tough ride but nothing compared to what those who need Bunjum Transition House experience. We need your support to help Bunjum continue its great work. Please dig deep and make a donation and share this page. Then start a conversation.
