BUOY MARKERS at CONEY ISLAND and BRIGHTON BEACH
Donation protected
If you ever spend time at Coney Island and Brighton Beach, there is a good chance you have seen jet skis or boats come pretty close to the shore, perhaps even too close! Well, what is too close? How would you even know? How would the boat know?
Too close is 500 ft. That is THE STATE LAW!!! No watercraft permitted within 500 feet of a bathing beach/swim area. Back in the 90s, there was a series of buoys running parallel to the shore marking the 500 foot ”no boat zone". They are all gone now, and the city refuses to put new ones in place (we have asked!)
Now, if you are at the beach regularly, you have probably seen jet skis and wave runners zipping around way to close to people in the water. Or have seen fishing boats drift right into the bays, some even drop anchor. Needless to say, this is incredibly dangerous to anyone using our beautiful public beaches. It's a danger to both swimmers and general beach goers alike.
Since 2020, we have secured state permitted buoy markers delineating the 500 foot “no boat zone!” watercraft on the outside, swimmers on the inside. These buoys provide an important visual marker for all beachgoers, swimmers, boaters, jet skis, lifeguards, NY Parks and NYPD Harbor Patrol Enforcement. For the past three years we have placed buoy markers at Coney Island Avenue, Brighton 4th Street, and Ocean Parkway. This year we will extend the buoy line all the way to the Coney Island Pier. This project will be a huge public service to all that use the beach and the waters around it! Let’s keep the waters of Coney Island and Brighton Beach SAFE! for all to enjoy!
