Burlingame Skilled Nursing Workers Strike Support

Donation protected
Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We are writing on behalf of AFSCME Local 829 - Burlingame Skilled Nursing Chapter. Our contract expired in September 2020 but we continued to work through the depths of the COVID pandemic to ensure our patients were cared for. We have been bargaining with facility-owner Brius since last summer and are fighting for decent wages, safe staffing levels, and health insurance, but Brius has rejected all reasonable proposals and forced us to consider a strike.

We are in the skilled nursing industry because we love caring for our patients, some of the most vulnerable people in the state, and we want them to be treated with the highest standards of care. However, it is impossible for us to care for each patient properly in the current conditions. We are striking to keep our patients and our families safe. At this point, we have no other options.

In the last six weeks, 53 workers have tested positive for COVID at the facility and 20 patients have died. We are demanding that management ensure safety for us and our patients.

Our Demands:

1. Increase the number of staff on the floor

2. Provide health insurance that we can actually afford (healthcare workers should not have to pay $700/month for health insurance!)

3. Raise wages to keep experienced staff at the facility (many of us are paid minimum wage!)

Please support healthcare workers and vulnerable patients in this facility by donating to our strike fund. $25,000 in the strike fund will ensure we can stay out on strike for up to five days if necessary ($25/day to each member).

In solidarity,
