Support for CDM Organized by UWC Myanmar Alumni
On Feb 1 2021, Myanmar military junta illegally detained the country’s democratically elected leader and seized power in a military coup. Since then, Burmese people who are living in the country as well as abroad have been participating in protests and movements to resist the regime. We, Myanmar people, are calling for immediate demand for the release of our elected leaders and protestors, and to restore democracy in Myanmar. Despite a month long of peaceful protests, the military and police forces have responded with inhumane acts of brutality against its own citizens.
Many civil servants have been participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) as a peaceful way to resist the military authority and administration. However, the military has been raiding houses, arresting those participating in CDM as well as threatening the civil servants with dismissal. Many who were participating in the protests had been attacked or shot at brutally by the police and soldiers even in their own homes. Our civil servants participating in CDM need support for daily livelihood as well as protection from such inhumane brutalization by the military regime.
This fundraiser is to support the Civil Disobedience Movement as well as to provide assistance to those participating in the general protests.
Currently, we will mainly provide assistance to the Nursing University Student Union (NUSU) Alumni in Myanmar who are supporting the nurses participating in the CDM. The funds will be used to support the protest movements (protective gear, meals), regular cost-of-living support, legal protection, and relocation for security purposes. (More beneficiaries may be added as the fundraiser proceeds.)
