Hi Family and Friends,
June will mark a year that my Mom, Lori Jean Burnett passed away.
That first ten days, my dad, my brother and I were never alone as family & friends, gathered to support us during that period of intense grief.
Clearly, it's been a whirlwind of emotions for all of us. I miss her every day.
Our family has been reflecting on the best way to remember my mom and I think we've got it. Our family would like to establish a scholarship named in Memory of Lori Jean.
In 1979, Lori become a teen mom and had me. Then, 18 years later, I became a teen mom and had Chace.
It is lonely sometimes - and always hard work. Only another single parent can really understand the struggle.
My mom and dad understood life was going to be hard because they had lived the same experience. They became my rock to hold onto when circumstances were overwhelming.
My Family and I would like to extend that support to other teen moms because we realize the hardship they face while trying to finish school and still care for their babies.
There is place in Regina that helps young mothers finish school and encourages them to succeed - it is Mackenzie Infant Care Centre.
The Mackenzie Infant Care Centres have several infant and toddler rooms right at Balfour Collegiate that offer free care giving for babies of the student mothers. This support continues through high school, but then what for the babies and mothers?
Many of these young mothers have amazing grades but can’t afford post secondary school. I would like to propose we all pledge to make a difference in a young mother’s life.
Many of the young women who enter MICC programs have experienced various difficulties, ranging from dysfunctional families, including physical and sexual abuse. Since MICC opened its doors to those first 12 infants, more than 1,000 young mothers have been given the opportunity to succeed down the path of parenthood. There are a number of sad stories but there are also many heart-warming instances of success. MICC supports all the hearts that enter through our doors and hope that after graduation they all can smile with knowledge and look to a bright future.
The Lori Burnett Memorial will offer a Legacy Scholarship that would last the duration of 5 years with a yearly bursary of $6,000 issued to a different graduate each year. The Scholarship would be awarded at the Balfour Graduation ceremonies at Conexus Art Centre this June.
Our family will participate at graduation and present the award. (by the way...Chace will also be graduating at this event!)

LORI BURNETT LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP:
MICC helps create positive scenarios where young student moms are successfully completing grade 12 and graduating with confidence. Many of these young women dream of a post-secondary education. The majority of them struggle financially and do not enroll.
Help us give these young mothers greater opportunities. The hope of becoming self sufficient and attaining the best employment will lead to a better future. With your support these young women will have a chance to continue to learn. You will be helping hearts that smile with knowledge.
Providing continuity of education for our vulnerable moms to get to that next step of entering a post-secondary institution is a top priority for MICC.
