#BusLineHeroes: Support Transit Workers in Lebanon
Donation protected
COVID-19 is impacting transit workers around the world in different ways. In Lebanon, Riders' Rights حقوق الركاب and Train/Train Lebanon have identified a need to stand with bus drivers facing incredible economic hardship due to lockdown conditions and lack of protections as an informal sector.
The Seattle Transit Riders Union & the Riders Rights International Network are running this campaign to help raise some money for bus drivers in Lebanon who are struggling right now. Please pitch in!
Solidarity doesn’t end at our city limits, and it shouldn’t be confined by our borders either! Climate change, gentrification and car-centric urbanism are global problems that require us to learn from and stand with transit users everywhere.
In 2019, TRU members voted to partner with Riders’ Rights Lebanon, a grassroots NGO in Beirut, to launch the Riders’ Rights International Network. RRIN’s mission builds on TRU’s experiences in Seattle to raise awareness of transit and mobility rights issues, campaigns and struggles around the world, through an intersectional, justice-oriented and multi-disciplinary perspective.
Our vision is to support pro-transit movements and organizations around the world, with special emphasis on rider-led associations in the Global South, through mutual learning and material assistance when and where it’s needed most.
Update: We wanted to let you know how we plan to deliver these funds to the intended recipients. An authorized representative of the Transit Riders Union in Seattle will withdraw the funds raised from GoFundMe and send them via Western Union to an authorized representative of Riders’ Rights in Lebanon. Riders’ Rights will disperse the funds to the out-of-work and struggling bus and van drivers in their networks through OMT, a service similar to Western Union.
