I'm Libby, a Lennox Head local with connections across the Northern Rivers. After watching with disbelief as my child's school and many of our friends and family were being flooded, I contacted Claire and Cassie (also of Lennox and Ballina) and we decided to raise funds to support those that have been affected by the worst flooding this region has ever seen.
The impact of the flooding on the Northern Rivers has been devastating. Thousands of people have lost literally everything - it is heartbreaking.
We have been volunteering at evacuation centres and out in the region as part of the massive mud army, helping people clear their homes.
Thanks to this fundraiser, we were able to purchase and distribute hundreds of beds and essential items directly to those who needed them most in the first few days following the flooding, but there is still a heck of a long way to go.
The BUY A BED story
BUY A BED was initially created to provide much needed inflatable beds to evacuation centres. Thanks to your support, we achieved this goal within 2 days.
‘Buy a bed’ then evolved to supply evacuation centres with much-needed essentials. This included the purchase and distribution of cutlery, baby formula, nappies, ice/heat packs, power boards, pillows, disinfectant wipes, plates, cups, toothpaste and more.
As flood levels lowered, the clean-up began. With your generous donations, we were able to supply the flood victims with cleaning and hardware products including hammers, hard brooms, saws, buckets, rags, rakes, sledgehammers, gloves, sanitiser and more.
Having lost everything, these evacuees now need to restart their lives. We need to expand the ‘buy a bed’ campaign to now purchase basic items needed to rebuild their homes and their lives. These include mattresses, fridges, washing machines, microwaves, toasters and kettles.
It is our goal to enable the victims of this devastation to be as comfortable as possible as they move through this catastrophic event.
Until now we haven't withdrawn any money from Go Fund Me and have been funding all expenses ourselves. We have now set up a unique bank account for 'Buy a Bed' with our Ballina branch of BOQ and will use this account to withdraw the funds as and when they are required.
