Please help the family of one of my dance students!
Ryan Alger, son of Scott and Kristina(Wilhelm) Alger was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, in October of 2016, and underwent a 14 hour brain surgery. He was in the Pediatric ICU at Albany Med for almost a month. This was followed by daily two hour round-trip visits back to Albany Med for 7 weeks for his radiation treatments.
Next, 9 rounds of chemotherapy required over a year's worth of the same two hour trip. Oftentimes these trips turned into an all day ordeal due to the need for blood transfusions. (One time they didn't get home until after 2 a.m.) This was often with two other kids in tow because they are homeschooled and dad is the sole provider.
Treatment is complete and Ryan is on the road to recovery. The road is long and the road is expensive. This challenge has spanned three years. That is 3 year's worth of co-pays,(5000/yr) trips to Albany, MRI's, gas, food, supplements, therapists (one of which, the only one in New York State who specializes in Ryan's type of diagnosis, is in Long Island, over an 8 hour round-trip!) He has had physical therapy to re-learn to walk and to regain his strength and balance. Vision therapy will start soon. The surgery left Ryan unable to see beyond 15 feet. This has improved but is a work in progress.
During this 3 year span they also had to replace their dishwasher, washing machine, hot water tank and their car's engine blew. Oh...and the family dog became ill and had to be put down after a $2000 attempt to save her life. (She was only 6)
With all of these hardships, this family is so inspiring and positive and always there for everyone. They are truly an amazing family that support one another and teaches all of us the importance of having a kind heart and a positive mindset.
Please help me bless them!
