Help Mom Walk Again: Support Her Rehab

Hi, I’m reaching out on behalf of my mother, who suffered a life-altering stroke on October 21, 2023. Since then, our world has been turned upside down.

Before her stroke, my mom worked for the Rapides Parish School Board, a job she truly loved. She took pride in what she did every day. Sadly, because she’s been out of work for so long, she has lost that job, and with it, a big part of what gave her purpose and joy.

The stroke left her with limited mobility on her left side, and her left leg is severely constricted, making it impossible for her to walk or function independently. While she had insurance through her job, it does not cover physical therapy—the one thing that could help her reclaim some of her independence and dignity.

My father, some close friends and relatives, and I have all done what we can to care for her. But with my full-time work schedule and my father's own declining health, we eventually had no choice but to place her in a nursing home—miles away from home.

The facility she’s currently in has not lived up to our expectations. We’ve witnessed moments of neglect, and recently, she was wrongfully sent to a mental health facility after a nurse accused her of throwing a cup at another resident—something we believe is physically impossible given her condition. During her stay there, we were only allowed to visit her for 30 minutes a day. The saddest part? She actually received better care at the mental facility than in the nursing home.

This entire experience has been emotionally and financially draining for our family. We are doing everything we can, but we’ve reached a point where we urgently need help. We are raising funds to get my mom into a proper rehabilitation program that offers consistent and professional physical therapy—something that could truly change her quality of life and give her the fighting chance she deserves.
