Empower the Embera Tribe

Donation protected
The people of the Emberá tribe, who live in the traditional village of Emberá Purú, located in the Chagres National Park, in Panamá depend 100% on tourism for their income.

With the current coronavirus situation, all flights into Panamá have been cancelled and tourism and all opportunity to earn a living has disappeared for the people of Emberá Purú.

They are a friendly people who love to share their culture, history and way of life with visitors from around the world.  They normally receive 5-10 tour groups each week.  Now, nobody is coming to visit.

They can still fish and they raise chickens, but hunting is not allowed in the park, so no red meat is available without purchasing it.  They do grow some crops such as corn, plantains and yucca, but rice, a regular part of their diet must also be bought.

All staples, such as cooking oil, salt, flour and other basic necessities must be purchased at a store that is a 45 minute ride away in their dugout canoe.  There are no roads, only river travel.  They have outboard motors, for which they must buy gas and oil.

Your donation will help preserve the way of life for the Emberá people.  If there is no money, they will have to abandon their traditional homes and move in with extended family in small crowded homes in the poorest areas (slums) of Panama City.   This will put them at a much higher risk of being exposed to and catching the coronavirus.

In the city they would need even more money and even if they could get a job, which there are few of right now, they would be lucky to get paid the minimum wage of only $15 US per day. Plus, living in the slums they will be exposed to gangs, drugs and violence on a daily basis.

All donations will be divided equally among all 34 families (Each family averages 5-7 people.) that make up the village of Emberá Purú.  They will be used to buy food and gas for their motors so they can get to the store and to reach the best fishing areas.  In the jungle your money will go much farther.  Even just $5 will by a pound of rice, cooking oil and a pound of meat, that can feed an entire family for a meal.

These funds are needed now to keep the Emberá people fed, housed and healthy.

Please help to keep the Emberá in their cultural homes in the safety and coronavirus free tropical rainforest they were born and raised in.

I met and married into this tribe in 2004.  I instantly felt at home with them and they welcomed me with open arms.  I love them as my family and began this campaign to support them through this very difficult time.  Please help me to help these beautiful indigenous people.

From the bottom of my heart I am in deep gratitude for anything you can give to assist the Emberá tribe.

As the Emberá would say BIA BUA!  (Thank you in Emberá)
