Officer Idrissa Camara went to work Friday, August 21, 2015 not knowing that would be the last time he would take a breathe. His shift ended at 4pm and he agreed to stay on a second shift at 201 Varick Street in NYC. He was a senior secuirty officer for FJC Security a company that handled the screening, and security for the federal building. It was shortly after the second shift that Kevin Downing an unemployed, veteran who was upset over a job loss from several years earlier...approached Camara. After completing a guests screening he turned to Downing to greet him. He was then shot at point blank range by Downing's handgun. He proceeded to ethe elevator where other employees were exiting. Camara lay lifeless, fighting to stay alive. Downing then took his own life. Officer Camara was rushed to a nearby hospital and passed away there. He was happily married, had 4 young children, and in the picture you will see his youngest girl.
Camara was hard working, loving and the most supportive person I have ever met. It was an honor to have been his supervisor, co-worker and friend. If you learn anything from this tragedy you need to rememeber that no matter how young or old you are tomorrow is not guranteed nor promised. My friend Camara didn't get the chance to say goodbye to his family and friends. He won't watch his children grow up, graduate and his daughter won't have her daddy there to walk her down the aisle.
I ask that you send prayers to his family and friends to help find peace through the next coming hours, days and weeks. This won't be an easy time for anyone. When innocence is taken away and children remain fatherless. You can only pray, hope and grieve that we can find a light at the end of this dark tunnel.
Camara, I promise to support, pray and send love to your family. I promise that all of the Varick family will be there for your wife, your children and those struggling with your loss. It has been an honor to know you, work with you and be a part of your life. Thank you for all the smiles and teddy bear hugs you have shared with us.
Until we meet again my friend, Camara you have an entire world looking up at you. Please proivde hope, faith and strength in the coming days!
End of Watch 08/21/2015..until we meet again!
