The Dr. Eyatta Yvette Fischer First Generation Scholarship
I am Elvoyd Fischer, the mother of Eyatta Fischer. I can still hear her cry as she entered the world on May 7, 1975, at South Miami Hospital in Miami, Florida.
She was a bubbly, beautiful baby girl. My heart merged with hers instantly, spanning a lasting bond for forty years. On July 19, 2015, Eyatta became a victim of an aggressive bacteria called streptococcus-pyogenes, which sent her body into toxic shock and became fatal in three days. Words, there are NO words that can describe the emptiness, the loss, the feeling of despair, the heartache and the heartbreak of losing my one and only child. Eyatta was a darling little girl whose smile was bright and infectious, a daughter any parent would love to have.
She enjoyed reading...her head was always in a book. She loved writing, music (Piano and upright bass) and dancing. She was in gifted and talented academic and music programs in the Miami-Dade Public School system from elementary through senior high school.
Eyatta attended the University of Florida in Gainsville, Florida, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The College of Arts and Science, as an English major, and music minor.
Eyatta received a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree from Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia. After ten years of teaching, Eyatta matriculated to The Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio to obtain her Doctorial degree in Teaching and Learning. I might add her favorite pastime was Salsa Dancing. Eyatta was a Salsa Club member in Atlanta, Georgia where she taught English for ten years. She joined the Salsa community after moving to Columbus, Ohio.
My heart was warmed by all of the outpourings of love felt for my daughter on FB, phone calls, emails and text messages. I read comments stating "as a student, you touched my life...as a friend, you were always there for me" Eyatta was a mentor and confidant to many.
I now have my own ANGEL watching over me.
I established this Go Fund Me initially for two years to use donations for a scholarship to keep her legacy alive.
Eyatta was passionate and dedicated to expanding diversity in the classroom setting. Eyatta was a people person who motivated and inspired her students to set high goals and to believe in themselves. My initial two-year scholarship plan became a ten-year commitment for me. Each year I award deserving seniors who are the first in their immediate family to attend college from Miami Palmetto Senior High School where Eyatta graduated, and their names are engraved on the ten-year perpetual plaque which hangs in the "Panther" halls.
Students received $1,000 in the first five years to help with college expenses. Due to the Corvid Era, I added a second-place scholarship of $500, as many families of graduating high school seniors experienced hardships.
My ten-year commitment will end in 2025. I would like to give more to the recipients going forward due to the high cost of overall college expenses.
I am humbled by the support received to keep Dr. Eyatta Yvette Fischer's First Generation Scholarship legacy alive.
