The day before thanksgiving Bernie came down with what we thought was the flu. We thought we could just ride it out at home, but by Friday, the day after thanksgiving, he was just getting worse with his fever reaching over 103 degrees. We made the decision to go to the emergency room, once there we found out that he was not sick with the flu, but in fact he was sick with what is called MSSA bacteremia. This is a serious infection that occurs when the bacteria enters the bloodstream. It can cause skin infections, heart problems, lung infections or brain infections. He was immediately admitted to the hospital where he stayed until Thursday, Nov. 30th. We were informed by the infectious disease doctor that Bernie would have to get a picc line placed and receive infusion antibiotics everyday for 30 days at the cost of $2100 a day. While having the picc line put in bernie was informed that while he has this he can not lift anything over 10 pounds, which essentially means he can not get back to work until mid January. This illness has completely devastated us financially. Bernie does not have insurance so we are having to pay for this out of pocket and this will completely drain what little money we have. We are just trying to not lose everything we have so we won’t have to move back to South Carolina. Our son Chance is thriving here in North Carolina, he is a sophomore in high school maintaining a 4.2 gpa while also being on the wrestling team. He has grown up with his friends since the 2nd grade and we would like to do everything we can to not disrupt his life while he is doing so good. We understand that times are tough for everyone right now, so we will be grateful for anything.
