Caleb Barney student amputee fights rare cancer
Donation protected
In October 2016 while attending college as an 18 year old freshman, Caleb started to have pain in his right calf. After having his leg looked at by multiple doctors he was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive pediatric cancer. Caleb fought through chemotherapy and radiation treatments and in July of 2017 he was declared cancer free. Tragically, in June of 2019, after nearly two years of being in remission his cancer returned. Determined to once again beat the tumor that has plagued him for nearly three years, Caleb once again entered into the battle. Unfortunately, this time the cancer would not be as easily beaten. After examining him the doctors came to the decision that along with aggressive chemotherapy they would need to amputate his right leg to save him from the cancer that had loomed over him for so long.
On August 30th a successful amputation was preformed and his doctors believe that the cancer has been fully removed. Caleb still has two rounds of chemotherapy to ensure that the cancer has fully been beaten, but as soon as those are done this athletic 21 year old will have another battle, a battle to return to his life as normal without his right leg. To be able to regain his independence and return to college to finish his degree, we are asking for help to be able to get Caleb the prosthetics and items that he will need. Once studying to become a successful architect, Caleb has found a new purpose. He is now determined to graduate as a social worker to be able to work in pediatric hospitals, helping children who are going through the same struggles that he fought through. To reach this goal he is going to need to be able to get a prosthetic that will allow him to be independent and active. He is also going to need to have a car modified and go through specialized drivers education classes to be able to legally drive again.
Once a talented rock climber with a love of the outdoors and adventure, Caleb will need a prosthetic that will not only allow him to be active and mobile, but will be durable and dependable as he returns to his normal life. Caleb is in the process now of speaking with various doctors regarding his prosthetics and he is being told that he will need two separate legs, one for everyday life, and one that can hold up to the active lifestyle that he pursues. Most of the items that he needs to be able to return to his life are unfortunately not covered by insurance and are also quite expensive. We don't know exactly what the costs are going to be, however, after speaking with the specialist we are anticipating the costs to be around $25,000. This will go to cover the expenses related to the prosthetics that he is going to need, the covers to protect them, the modifications, training, and vehicle expenses needed to allow him to drive and various other items that he will need to allow him to be able to get back to his goal of finishing out school and helping others. The doctors are hopeful that with the right prosthetic and treatments that Caleb will be able to return to college by the spring semester. Any donations will help with this and are greatly appreciated. We will be posting updates with information as we get them and as Caleb continues to progress.
