CALEB FLECK Medical fundraising

Caleb Ray Fleck was born Saturday, June 16th, 2018 @ 6:38pm weighing 8lb 7oz.

Sunday afternoon Caleb’s nurse came to get him for one of his checks. She returned and inquired whether the family had noticed any rapid breathing, which they had not. She brought him back to Justin and Jackie and they were able to enjoy a Father’s Day dinner with both of their boys.

Around 6:15, Jackie paged the nurse as she had also noticed the weird breathing. The nurse came to get him and things seemed to escalate from there. Caleb was given an echo and an EKG to watch his heart. The nurses consulted with the pediatrician on call, who then consulted with the neonatologist, who then called Mayo. It was determined at that time to admit him to the NICU for further testing. At about 10:15p Justin and Jackie were finally let in to see him. It was told to them at that time that a flight team was on their way and that they were taking Caleb to Minneapolis Children’s Hospital.

At 1:45 am on Monday, the flight team left with him in their care. Justin and Jackie ran home to get a few things ready and jumped on the road to meet them at the Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.

Preliminary testing is showing that Caleb has what was called a 2nd degree heart block (which is better than the original prognosis!). The doctors explained it by saying that his upper chamber of his heart is firing normal, but the lower part of his heart is only reacting half the time. If his heart would react normally he would have a “normal” heart rate in the 110’s or 120’s but because it’s only half he is in the 50s and 60s.

There are a lot of tests that still need to be ran before any diagnosis is finalized and a course of action is planned. As of now, they have Caleb on a medication called Isoproterenol to maintain his heart rate, but are trying to ween him off to obtain a baseline and to see if Caleb can keep his heart rate up without it.

Funds will be used for medical bills, hospital stay, and extended follow-up care for Caleb, as well as for lodging and food for Justin and Jackie while Caleb is treated.
