Hi family,
Calling in support for two of our dearest friends Josie and Adrian after a fire took their home last week.
At 2:45am in the morning, beloveds Jose and Adro woke to the shrilling screams of their housemate Louis outside their window as their Victorian style, early 1900’s, rental home in Melbourne went up in flames.
This fire was the silent type, creeping through the walls and roof of their house with a few sneaky creaks and cracks but it wasn’t until the windows started combusting that Louis woke to the flames. With the power already taken by the fire, Josie and Adrian fumbled in the dark to find a phone and call 000. They threw on an item of clothing each and climbed out the window with a few possessions - electronics, a bird wing and a hand written poem. Charlie who lived in a seperate bungalow in the garden was also woken not long after and the four stood in shock and terror as they watched 9 fire trucks and 29 firefighters fill their street and home. Huddled in blankets, they watched the battle continue until the sun began to rise.
Due to the toxicity of the asbestos fuelled smoke, what wasn’t lost to the flames is now contaminated with carcinogens and too unsafe to keep. They lost pretty much everything, from clothes, books, bedding, furniture and kitchenware to sacred items like Josie's medicine drum, Adrian’s didge and deeply sentimental items collected from around the world.
Josie, Adrian and their housemates are currently processing the grief, shock and death of their life as they knew it, but are extremely grateful for what matters most; their health, each other and their lives.
