My name is Dr. Myeshia Babers, and I am a passionate filmmaker dedicated to sharing stories that inspire change and promote education equity. I am currently working on a documentary titled "Beyond the Schoolyard: A Testament to the Power of Education," which explores the history of the Calvert Colored/W.D. Spigner School and its lasting impact on the African American community.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in our education system and the ongoing struggle for equal opportunities. This experience ignited a fire within me to create a film that not only sheds light on the past but also encourages viewers to take action in the present.
The Calvert Colored/W.D. Spigner School played a crucial role in providing education to African American students during the era of segregation. Despite the challenges faced, the school's dedicated educators, like W.D. Spigner, and its tight-knit community fostered an environment that nurtured the minds and hearts of its students.
Through this documentary, I aim to celebrate the school's legacy, honor the achievements of its alumni, and raise awareness about the ongoing fight for education equity. By preserving the history of segregated schools, we can ensure that future generations learn from the past and work towards a more just and equitable future.
In 2024, the Calvert Colored/W.D. Spigner School will be recognized as a state historic landmark, a testament to its significance in the community and the nation's history. This documentary will serve as a tribute to the school and its alumni, while also inspiring viewers to support efforts to address education inequality today.
