Calvin John Brumm, Katie & Chris Brumm & Family

Hi, my name is Moira, for those of you that don't know me already, and Katie (Smith) Brumm is a great, dear friend of mine. A great friend to many. Her and her husband, Chris welcomed their baby boy, Calvin into the world sooner than expected, due to onset of HELLP syndrome, on March 27th (due date was mid-May), weighing just over 2lbs. He then spent the next 3 weeks in the NICU at Albany Medical Center where he fought hard and made great headway. He was then released to Glens Falls Hospital, and finally home. Things didn't end there though, unfortunately. He was then brought back 3 weeks later when Mom (Kate), rushed him to the ER that afternoon because he had vomited yellow colored formula, he was refusing his bottle and the possible hernia issue (that he was being monitored at home for) was getting worse. Upon admission he had received a number of tests and x-rays and he tested positive for rhino enterovirus. Sunday they concluded this was all due to the hernia and he went in for surgery that evening. Everything went well and he was being held overnight due to his age and premature status. Monday his breathing started to get labored and they decided another overnight was necessary because his body wasn't strong enough to fight the virus he also had. Early Tuesday morning they woke up to the nurse coming in to ask when he ate last... they both replied "12:45am", and noticed Calvin was crying, Katie picked him up and he turned blue in her arms. He aspirated, code blue, cardio-pulmonary arrest. As any parents would be they were besides themselves and in shock as the medical team rushed in to save his life. After they revived him and intubated him they took poor baby Cal to the PICU. Since then he's has a blood transfusion, aggressive respiratory therapy, lung and stomach suctioning, a cat scan, another 25 xrays, another cardio pulmonary arrest, a cocktail of hard drugs in his system, feeding tube, a pic line catheter, brain scan, a scope into his airways and nose, ENT specialist, respiratory therapist, neurologist, speech therapist, pulmonologist and the list goes on and on. To say we are lucky to still have him here is an understatement. Everyday is a miracle, but the family needs our help now more than ever. Chris and Katie both have two boys at home, one in 1st grade, one in middle school. They have spent just about every waking minute at AMC in the NICU, sleeping in windowsills, and a recliner, not being able to hold their baby. The trips back and forth are expensive, parking, coffee, food, childcare for other children and let's not even think about the medical bills they will receive, all while both are unable to work at the time due to their circumstances. They are living every parents worst nightmare and still have a long road ahead of them! This fundraiser is for the family, for expenses during this terrible time and especially for Baby Calvin! He needs to feel the love that's surrounding him back home. If you are able, every penny means the world to them and their entire family. Please send prayers and positive vibes towards this little fighter! Thank you for taking the time to listen, please feel free to share.
Update from family as of 6/20/2022
And as of 6/27/2022 Calvin still remains in the PICU due to episodes of mentioned below. The family is overwhelmed with love shown from everyone who's reached out, shared this funsraiser and just the overall LOVE shown by friends and communities near and far. WE LOVE YOU BABY CALVIN!
**Calvin had a great weekend overall. More tests planned for this week including an MRI. His voice is very slowly coming back. He will be reevaluated by ENT and speech pathology. Unfortunately he keeps having breath holding episodes when he cries too hard and dropping his heart rate, for that reason he remains in the PICU. He still isn't eating orally in fear of him aspirating again. We still don't have all the answers we need, but best case scenario he just needs to grow out of this and mature. This could all be due to his prematurity at birth, only time will tell. Again thank you to everyone who took time to send their love, thoughts, prayers, good vibes and financial help our way. We appreciate you more than you know! #thoseeyebrows #calvinandhobbes**
