Our volunteer experience earlier this year in Cambodia teaching English and building basic bathrooms for families left our hearts and souls full. It was a truly inspiring and life changing experience. I am still having trouble finding the words to describe that experience. Witnessing the extreme poverty, the malnourished faces of young hungry children begging, swimming in ditches polluted with human waste, living in houses without walls, and lacking the most basic of needs, was difficult to say the least. To spite their grave circumstances we were met each day with immense gratitude and beautiful, loving smiles that will stay with us forever. It truly gave us a new appreciation for the things we are privileged to have and left us wanting to help more. We complain a lot less! Many people have reached out asking how they can help the children. I have been invited back to Cambodia in February 2020 to join an amazing group of volunteers and participate in the launch of a new project in the impoverished village of Tekthla located in a rural area of Siem Reap. This project is being developed to teach children ages 4-11 English as well as assist them and their families in learning the basic skills needed to work toward a better life. It’s their only chance. The project will operate primarily on raised funds to help with the cost of teachers, supplies, meals at school for the children (often their only meal of the day) along with volunteers who will continue to assist throughout the year with the English program as well as community projects, such as building bathrooms and shelter.
Just a few dollars goes a very long way in assisting with the cost of teachers, school supplies, food, and building supplies.
· 30.00 will buy a quality bag of rice which will feed a family of 4 for almost a month.
· 45.00 or less will buy a bicycle that will help 1-3 children get to the school to learn and to be fed.
· 750.00 will purchase supplies to build an entire bathroom for a family who most likely never had one.
· 10.00 will buy at least 2 dresses & 2 shirts for a child in the village
Cambodia remains one the poorest nations in the world. Much of the money that comes into Cambodia for aid/relief unfortunately does not make it to the villages. Over 30% of the almost 15 million people who live there are considered poor, most living in rural areas. Any funds raised will help this new project in the village of Tekthla and possibly allow me to make a small donation to the project in Spainkhaek village where we volunteered earlier this year. I will personally deliver funds as well as food and supplies purchased on my arrival with any funds raised. Any amount helps. Thank you for any support.
