FIGHTING FOOD POVERTY, CSF Community food hubs

CSF and Food Justice Work in Cambridge, Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC (CSF) is a community interest company based in Cambridge, UK.
CSF works with residents, businesses, organisations and community groups to advocate and enable access to healthy and sustainably produced food that is good for people and the planet.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, CSF developed an emergency food programme in March 2020. Through working in partnership with the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance, CSF established the now eight Community Food Hubs across the city, providing free food to people in need, without a referral. With support from Cambridge City Council, CSF set up a central Community Food Centre in August 2020 to receive, store and send out the surplus and donated food to the Food Hubs and other organisations feeding people across the city, as well as providing cooked food for the holiday lunch programme and other citywide programmes.
Between 2020 and 2022 over 470 tonnes of food were redistributed, including over 123 tonnes of surplus food as well as over 20,000 meals.
Covid-19 exacerbated issues of food insecurity already present in Cambridge before the pandemic and now, with rising food and fuel costs, people are experiencing greater
hardship, especially the most vulnerable in our community.
As part of the city’s #GoldFoodCambridge ambition by 2024, Cambridge is now aspiring to become a national example for the city’s food justice work. As part of this, CSF is continuing to develop and deliver the city’s food justice programme in partnership with the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance, working to increase access to healthy, sustainable food for all.
