Cameron Smith's Eagle Scout Project

Trees are the lungs of the world.

Hi, my name is Cameron Smith, I am a junior at Thomas Worthington High School and a Life Scout in Troop 123. I am working towards completing my Eagle Scout project to benefit Duxberry Park Alternative Elementary School. Duxberry Elementary is located in a neighborhood with tree canopy percentage in the low teens, while the ideal tree canopy percentage for living conditions is 40. This means that there is not enough to support acceptable air quality or a healthy ecosystem. Additionally, the adjacent corner of the recess field at Duxberry Elementary has a hole in the fence and exposure to a loud industrial facility.

Planting more trees at Duxberry will contribute towards the City of Columbus' Urban Forestry Master Plan goal of having 40% tree canopy by 2030. An increase in trees at Duxberry would also provide shade for play areas, sound screening, and beautify the premises.

I’m raising money to buy and plant 9 trees to beautify the grounds of Duxberry Elementary and raise the tree canopy percentage closer to an acceptable level. Three of the trees will go in the corner with the hole in the fence for sound screening and privacy, the other six will be placed throughout the grounds, including one for an outdoor teacher lunch area.  Also, students will be able to cover parts of their science standards with more hands-on investigation while learning about trees and taking care of trees.

On Saturday October 16th we will be removing trees from burlap and placing them in their holes, mulching over them, tying them off, and setting up their watering system. Your donation to this project means a lot and will make a difference in the lives of Duxberry staff and students, as well as the surrounding community.
