Campaign for Elizabeth Scagel and family

Donation protected
Elizabeth Jarvis Scagel is my niece and one of the most endearing, smart and caring young women you will meet.  A wife and mother of seven children, Elizabeth had a large hernia she was dealing with for the past nine years due to a bad C section incision she had with her first birth.  Due to limited income, she and her husband only had insurance through John Peters Hospital, the county hospital in Fort Worth.  Despite going to two JPS doctors in the past year who did not deem the hernia a life threatening situation and therefore would not operate on her (the hernia was very visible to the eye), she was in pain most of the time.

On Friday, February 1st, Elizabeth was rushed to the hospital and suffered a strangulated hernia that cutoff her small intestine. It was a life threatening situation and they operated.  After 3 surgeries, more than half her small intestine removed and spending  5 nights in ICU, Elizabeth is on the mend, but her long recovery has some challenges.  There will be expenses for aftercare that the insurance does not cover that Elizabeth will need for at least a month.  Given she and her husband are on a very limited income but work hard  to make ends meet each month, they are going to need extra financial help.  They were both going to school on grants and student loans to further their education (Kenny works as a junior high teacher at Shady Oak Academy), but Elizabeth will have to postpone her studies until next fall once she recovers.  She will need an automated hospital bed to be delivered to her home, a visiting nurse, sitters during the day and extra help with the younger kids during her recovery.

While some family can pitch in, it takes a village! Many of you have asked how can you help. Being available to come and sit is one way but also contributing to offset some of the costs is another way.  If you would like to give, we have setup this GoFundMe page to help cover some of Elizabeth costs for her recovery at home.

Thank you for your help!
