Campaign for Free Phone Calls in Oklahoma

My name is Emily Shelton. I am the founder of Hooked on Juctice. A non-profit 501(c)3 that advocates for criminal justice reform as well as human rights.

Are you tired of paying for phone calls? A phone call from prison is any where from $3.00 up to $8.00. Every prison the fee is different. Connecticut, California, Minnesota, Colorado, and Massachusett have now entered in to law for free phone services to their jails and prison.

No cost calls will eleviate the financial burden and remove barriers for an individual in Oklahoma DOC custody to stay connected with their families and outside support system. Keeping men and women in custody connected with family helps the rehabilitive process, reduces recidivism, and plays a major part of an individual success upon reentry back into society.

Paying for calls is an added stress to family members. Family are struggling to pay rent and bills as it is than have to worry about how they are going to talk to their loved ones.

This year we will be pushing for free phone calls. This takes time and money. We are planning a big event in June to launch this campaign and kick off a bill to be presented to the legislstors in the House.

Organizations from other states that have pushed the bill for free calls will be flying in to help us get free calls here.
