Clean Air for Croxted Road too

Southwark/Lambeth Residents Opposing the Dulwich Village LTN

Croxted Road Residents Association

Southwark Council recently introduced the Dulwich Village Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) with the hazy objective of ‘making it easier to walk and cycle’.

However we are experiencing the real and hugely damaging impact of this policy. We now have unprecedented traffic jams running the entire length of Croxted Road due to road barricades in Dulwich Village (DV) and the timed restrictions on Burbage & Turney road (each weekday, mornings and evenings). Croxted Road is suffering from the displaced traffic, now one of the only remaining conduits for traffic. Residents, cyclists and pedestrians have to endure long periods of idling traffic (across pedestrian crossings no less) with huge increases in pollution and noise.  We also know it is adding journey time to public transport (buses No. 3 and No. 201) and increasing response times for the emergency services due to recent information contained in Freedom of Information requests.

Croxted Road is home to two pre-school nurseries, is a popular walking route to Rosendale Primary school and many people (children and adults) wait for buses in the polluting smog which has been hugely exacerbated by the displaced idling traffic.

Our position is unique in that we are a community of residents who live on a main residential road A2199 which straddles the Lambeth and Southwark borders.

Who are we?

A group of residents who want the full negative pollution and traffic impact of the LTN recognised on our road and other main residential roads.  We have united amid grave concerns over the undemocratic way LTNs have been implemented and the ensuing detrimental repercussions on our residential road, on our residents, and the many families who access the services provided on the street. We are a community body who fundamentally feel persecuted because we live on a main (A) road.

Image above showing traffic at a standstill heading northbound along  Croxted Road early evening .  Emergency services are stuck and have to drive the wrong way down the length of the road to respond to the emergency call.

•  Why should we bear the ‘fly-tipping’ of traffic from some of the relatively quiet roads in Dulwich Village?

•  Why introduce LTNs when they displace and concentrate additional pollution on main roads where there are often already illegal levels of pollution?

•  We can see, hear and smell the increase in pollution.  Why is the council not funding comprehensive air quality monitoring on main roads?

Due to the undemocratic nature of their implementation, lack of consultation and no impact assessments within the local community we are asking Southwark Council to review this with the expediency, impartiality and diligence that it deserves. A holistic approach is the only socially equitable way to view this dilemma.

We are not alone - thousands of residents are feeling the burden of this hugely damaging and divisive policy on their lives, livelihoods and on the community as a whole.  We are campaigning in the hope to unite all communities affected adversely and those that are understandably sympathetic to main road residents and users by the LTN’s to promote a ‘Clean Air for ALL’ campaign.

Why a fundraising page?

We are an entirely a volunteer led body, none of whom receive compensation of any kind and are looking to fund essential costs for running the campaign - all donations will go to frontline costs.

We are urgently looking to raise £1,500 to fund purchasing equipment for pollution monitoring on Croxted Road and to also raise awareness with leafleting etc. of this awful traffic measure. We are in regular contact with Southwark Council and we will use this data to form the basis of our future discussions.

After promises from the council to install additional Air Quality (AQ) monitors on Croxted Road, nothing has materialised. The formal review stage will be upon us soon and we would like to obtain concrete measurements of air quality to help our cause.  We can see the additional traffic from our homes but we need data to support what we know is happening. We fundamentally believe the huge increases in traffic over peak times on Croxted Road are exceeding the exposure of legal limits of nitrogen dioxide NO2.

Nitrogen dioxide (or nitrous oxide) is an acidic gas that can cause human respiratory infections and asthma, increasing a person's vulnerability and severity to infection.  Long-term exposure to high levels of nitrogen dioxide can cause chronic lung disease. Vulnerable groups (children, the elderly and those with pre-existing lung conditions) are at particular risk. For example, recent research has identified that high levels of exposure reduce children's lung capacity and are detrimental to children's cognitive functioning.

The following is a projected breakdown of how we plan to spend the money raised.

• Air Quality (AQ) monitoring;

- diffusion tubes for 12 months of monitoring - approximately £500

- A ‘lower cost’ AQ monitor estimated to be £700 (hopefully available in the summer 2021 as part of the project: https://www.breathelondon.org

• Repay those who have incurred poster printing costs

• Other printing costs for future marketing material
