We create tranformational spaces for young people to develop leadership skills and build community in Moramanga, Madagascar.
OUR STORY
Jessica grew up in a region of the Madagascar where many families experience high levels of poverty and little opportunity for higher education, and she wanted to see that change. She wanted to create a culture and build a society in Madagascar that was fair, kind, and just--free from the corruption and exploitation that caused so many problems for her people. To do that, we decided to focus on growing a generation of young people who could be the nation's future leaders, and we had to start locally--in Jessica's home town, Moramanga.
In the summer of 2017, we had the opportunity to host the first ever Camp Fihavanana. We brought together 30 high school students in Moramanga, Madagascar with the hope of creating powerful, honorable, kind leaders. Future leaders who embody Fihavanana. Fihavanana is a word in the native language of Madagascar that we don't have a direct translation for in English-- it means friendship, but more than that--community, but a little bit deeper--family, but a little bit different. It is rooted in the ancestral land of Madagascar, and it's what binds people in this world to do good and be good. It's what we need in our leaders.
At Camp Fihavanana we coach sports, teach leadership skills, facilitate team building, and give students opportunities to explore possibility. In the summer of 2017, campers learned basketball, soccer, and lacrosse, hiked up a giant waterfall, visited universities, explored the capital city & U.S. Embassy, and developed friendships that were transformational.
It was so much fun, AND it worked. We have evidence. In our post-camp surveys 95% of campers said they feel like stronger leaders. 98% say they made new friends and feel more connected to their community. 100% will follow through on their plans to make impact. “Plans to make impact?” you ask. YES. Throughout camp we discussed the issues that they saw around them. They named pollution, poverty, and lack of support for kids. The 30 of them came up with three projects to continue after camp, including cleaning up litter from polluted areas, creating a lacrosse club for younger kids, and running a clothes drive to support their community. And they’re doing these projects, leading them themselves (check out our facebook page for details & updates), and using the skills we taught at camp to help out their neighbors and friends. It’s magical, and the effects of a program like Camp Fihavanana are long-term and can be life changing.
We need your support. Help us fundraise for Camp Fihavanana 2018. With the success of Camp 2017, we feel like we can do even more—and we need money to make it happen.
