Camp Mascot - Ukraine

Donation protected
Five years running, Camp MASCOT (Mykolaiv Artistic Summer Camp of Teamwork) is a program that gives Ukrainian youth a unique opportunity to learn and express themselves through critical thinking, individual expression, active citizenry and global awareness. Located in the Russian-speaking city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, Camp MASCOT creates a safe and stimulating environment where Ukrainians aged 16-20 experience the pressures and joys of problem solving and teamwork, feel comfortable exploring their creative and artistic talents, learn about a variety of domestic and international problems, speak English, and become exposed to the vast resources of cross-cultural outlook and skill-building. Our lessons and activities focus on the development of problem solving skills, critical thinking about social issues, creative expression, and project design and management (PDM).

2014 represents the most important year yet for our project! This year’s Camp MASCOT will be in Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University in Mykolaiv (www.chdu.edu.ua) from July 3-10th! The camp was previously organized by Peace Corps volunteers and received funding through Peace Corps grants. Due to the problematic situation in our country, Peace Corps Ukraine evacuated all volunteers and closed its program, so we have lost our American volunteers and a major source of funding. However, our Ukrainian youth leaders are more excited than ever to move forward, and this year’s goal is to develop and implement a social project in Mykolaiv during the course of the camp with the participation of more than 70 kids from all parts of Ukraine. We will be focusing on preparing the campers for initiating individual projects in their own communities after the camp session. We are also very lucky to have the support of some former Peace Corps volunteers who will come to help with our transition and participate in the camp as we continue to work hard towards a sustainable MASCOT.

Where will your money go? In Ukraine, it costs 83$ to pay for a camper's food, lodging, and camp materials for an entire week. Additionally, money from this grant will go towards the budget for the social project that will be planned and implemented by the campers. Our Ukrainian youth leaders have already raised $2,700 through a grant all on their own. With your help, we can reach our goal to successfully sponsor more than 70 children to attend the camp for 7 days. Any amount you can offer goes a long way in Ukraine!

Please help us empower our kids as they show that Ukraine is a lot more than what is seen on the news… In reality, we are peaceful people with beautiful land and rich cultural traditions. Our country is full of inspiring kids who are eager for the opportunity to better themselves and their communities! We thank you for your generosity and support of our people!
