Canal Cafeteria is a grassroots organization in the Lower East Side of Manhattan that aims to help make fresh, healthy food accessible to everyone in the community. CC began just two months ago with a mission to come together and feed the neighborhood, and has quickly evolved into something bigger, healthier, and more sustainable with each passing week.

Before the pandemic began, NYC had a food-insecure population of 1.1 million - this number is constantly growing as the city and its residents continue to struggle against COVID and its effects on health, income, and housing. The LES is over 60% BIPOC, with a poverty rate of 30% compared to a citywide 17.3% (furmancenter.org). Starting in August, Canal Cafeteria is transitioning from once weekly free lunches to pay-what-you-can CSA-style produce bags. CC aims to help fill a need for fresh, accessible produce that isn’t currently being met by existing services and organizations in the community.

We are 100% donation based. Fresh and local produce is exponentially more expensive than the lunches we were previously providing. Our goal is set at $10,000 to pay for food, transportation, PPE and other related expenses and supplies required for weekly food distribution. For questions or more information please visit us on Instagram or send us an email! Thanks for your continued support!
