Chemo is killing my teeth, please help save them!

Hello, I'm Mike. I'm a corgi dad and former software engineer/thespian/raconteur with Stage 4 Colon/Liver cancer and I've been beating the odds for just over three years now! I occasionally play games (mostly RPGs or sandbox/builders), solving puzzles, or playing frisbee with my amazing dog/caretaker Blade. Lately, I've become involved with retro gaming communities (otherwise known as The Old Nerd Club™) because my brain doesn't work as well as it used to (called "chemo fog") and older games generally don't demand as much of me as newer ones. Recently I got the good news that my cancer appears to be taking a little siesta and I can ratchet down the intense chemo I've been doing since this all began. Hooray!

...so I went to the dentist. The guidance on when, how often, and what kind of work dentists are allowed to do during chemo is very murky for a lot of us and neither of my care teams even mentioned it. Well, turns out that much like the rest of our bodies chemo wreaks absolute havoc on your oral health. In my case, it caused significant bone loss on my lower arch and deterioration of some teeth to such an extent that I need oral surgery and significant restorative work. I have dental insurance, but the $2,000 is not going to go far. I shopped around, got a 2nd and 3rd opinions and everyone agrees: I'm fucked. I've found a wonderful oral surgeon who has given me price breaks all over, but he can only do so much and that's just one piece of the puzzle. I was referred to a dentist that I like, and they are also cutting me a couple breaks but there is at least one crown in need of repair and the lab work costs what it costs.

If you need a little light reading, my ADHD brain referenced the ADA:

The Brass Tacks
  • The oral surgeon still has a follow up, but the grand total should be a little north of $6,000.
  • I still have about $8,000 worth of work dental work to do. I've borrowed money from family and friends to get lab work moving but at this point I don't have anyone left to borrow from. To be perfectly honest, I don't know how I'd pay them back if I did.

You might wonder "why the $9,000 goal, sounds like you need $14,000" and you'd be right. I've paid what I can for now, and I already borrowed money from friends and family to get the process moving. I'm not asking nor expecting this to handle all of it, I make sure my disability check gets where its' needed and I do everything in my power to stay afloat on my own. That said, this disease has taught me time and time again that no matter how independent we are and no matter how hard we work, sometimes we all just have to ask for help. So, here I am-

I could really use your help. A dollar, a dime, whatever you are able would be greatly appreciated. Everything collected will go to medical or dental expenses. Period. I've gotten this far thanks to my amazing friends, and I'm excited to (hopefully) see things calm down a bit. I want to go back to work, go on vacation, eat - you know, the fun stuff! I had to let go of normal life when this began, but maybe I will get a little more if I can clear this hurdle. Even if only for a while, it would be worth it. Thank you, ❤️

I was asked for other payment methods, I'll update the progress manually if anyone uses these:
  • PayPal: @micmap or PayPal.Me/micmap
  • Venmo: @micmap
