Thirteen years ago a man and woman fell in love. He came from a huge family, she came from a broken home, but together they created a life.
About ten years ago my family was living in an apartment complex in Wenatchee when we noticed our neighbor coming home from the grocery store. She was so pregnant she looked ready to pop, walking on crutches, and struggling to contain a toddler and her bags of groceries. I took the sacks from her while my four year old helped her get her toddler inside. This one moment in my life gave me a friendship that has turned into family. From that moment forward we have had each other's backs no matter what. We would have family game nights, exchange babysitting, do family dinners, take family trips to the park, and would take walks along the Columbia River. We survived the toddler years together and are now trying to navigate adolescence together.
Five years ago Melissa and Miguel and they're two boys moved to an adorable town in southern Idaho and bought a house to raise they're growing family. The thing they wanted most was another baby, hopefully a little girl. Two years ago they welcomed twins into their family, a boy and a girl. Today they are a strong, happy family of six, with children ages 11, 9, and the twins are 2.
In April they received news that no one should have to hear. Melissa was diagnosed with Stage 3 mixoid liposarcoma with round cell components in her right thigh and behind the right knee. Treatment is chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Unfortunately, the closest treatment center is Salt Lake City, a four hour drive from their home. This means that for every round of chemo she has to spend a week away from her family. All this on top of the stress involved with Covid-19 quarantine. In the first round of chemo she lost her hair, in the second round of chemo it started getting harder to be away from her family, after the third round it was getting harder to get out of bed and she opted to take a break from chemo and start radiation at her local hospital. At the end of October she will be getting surgery on her right leg and knee. We don't know how much of the leg they'll have to take.
As with so many families in this country, the medical expenses continue to grow as Melissa has to take time off work, leaving Miguel as the primary source of income. As well as the driving back and forth from Salt Lake for chemo, which she will have to resume after the surgery. Medical insurance doesn't cover all the costs, and the loss of Melissa's income makes it hard to cover their mortgage and the usual bills, on top of the medical bills coming in.
Melissa and Miguel have always taken a great deal of pride in working hard for everything they have and it's taken a great deal of soul searching to reach the point of creating a GoFundMe account.
Please donate anything you can to help their family defeat cancer and to help Melissa continue to be the incredible and loving mom that she is.
Thank you.
All my love,
Jade Boykin
