Cancer Szn: Short Film Fundraiser

My name is Zach Green (he/they) and I’m a writer-director from Calgary, Alberta. This summer, I’m directing my first funded short film cancer szn, an absurdist dark comedy that follows Patty, a modern witch who harbours a suffocating obsession for her former friend, Elaine. When she learns that Elaine’s new girlfriend, Lauren, shares the same birthday as her, she casts a body-swapping spell that grants her the relationship of her dreams at a fatal cost. Think Freaky Friday meets Persona.

As the first production I'll be making after completing my MFA in Scriptwriting from Toronto Metropolitan University, I can't wait to explore my voice as a cinematic storyteller, a process that is fueled by recalling my own messy memories of queer becoming and resituating them in a fantastical context. I’m also eager to establish a standard for my sets as supportive work environments that foster the creative growth of my trusted collaborators. As we gear up to shoot on August 26th and 27th, donations to this project will help us allocate additional resources towards specialty gear and to pay my incredible team the rates they deserve.

I also want to mobilize the goodwill of crowdsourced income in a manner that helps more queer lives than my own. Thus, half of the proceeds donated to our production will go to Calgary Outlink - Calgary’s Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

Calgary Outlink is a community-based, not-for-profit charity dedicated to providing support, education, outreach, and referrals for the 2SLGBTQIA+ and allied communities in Calgary, Alberta. At a time when anti-LGBTQ+ rallies are happening on the regular in this city, Calgary Outlink’s dedication to creating safe spaces for queer people has never been more important.
