Cancer to 5K (for Sophie)
Donation protected
I hate running. You know what I hate more? Cancer. Even more than that - "untreatable" cancer in a three-year-old.
Sophie: she's a perfectly adorable three-year-old from Adelaide with a horribly rare recurrence of neuroblastoma that can't be treated in Australia. Her father is a local medical scientist and a past close colleague of mine. There are promising treatments for Sophie but they are only available overseas and she needs to start urgently. Which means her whole family will have to relocate - during COVID - to give her a chance of survival. This could be any family. This could be my daughter. The heartbreak is unimaginable.
Me: if you've found your way to this page you probably know that I have been fighting metastatic stage 4 cancer since 2016. With support of generous family I was able to access new immunotherapy treatments. Incredibly, I am currently cancer-free although every scan brings the fear of another recurrence. My hope is that we can raise enough money for Sophie to access the treatment she needs to have a chance. If you've ever wondered what you can do to help me then this is it. Please contribute what you can to Sophie's family.
Running: since major abdominal surgery in 2017 I haven't been running. Like, at all. Radiation damage, surgery recovery, pregnancy, fatigue, joint pain, laziness... there's been many reasons but now is the time to get going again. If you donate to Sophie and sign up for updates I will keep you posted on my "Cancer to 5k" challenge. In the next 6 months I will aim to run 5k (without stopping). To get there I'll be training 2-3 times per week. I'm using the Couch to 5k app if you want to play along at home https://info.activenetwork.com/mobile-apps/couch-to-5k-app
