In a blink Candace's or as the hospital staff has lovingly nicknamed her Candace Knievel's life changed. On one of the few beautiful sunny days we have had in Central New York she took advantage of the weather. She went for a short motorcycle ride, as a newly licensed motorcycle operator, she had a friend following behind her.
The beautiful day turned to a life altering day for Candace. Candace went over the handle bars, doing 2 somersault type rolls and the motorcycle followed on top of her then it continued while she lay fighting.
I was right behind her in the car and quickly got to the side of the road next to her. The longest seconds ever as she sank into the ditch out of sight until I could get out of the car to her.
She was ALIVE!!!! She was in severe pain and hot as she had awesome protective gear protecting her from as much harm as it possibly could. She was wiggling her arms and legs and talking but then she suddenly started slurring and not making sense.
Living in a small community has BIG advantages in emergencies. An EMT lived seconds away from the accident and luckily was home. Another passerby was a local first responder as well. The close proximity saved Candace from suffering in pain for extended time lying in a ditch.
Her fight just began as no one knew what injuries she had. The staff at St. Elizabeth's hospital quickly worked on testing.
Candace suffered a CRUSHED T7 (spinal cord injury), broken right collar bone, 5 broken ribs, broken left ankle (inside and outside), and severe right sprained knee.
Candace is a fighter!!!! She has had 2 surgeries: 1) repairing her spine with pins and rods, 2) repairing her left ankle with screws.
She has to continue the fight!! She can not stand up let alone pee by herself. She will have several weeks of physical therapy to gain strength to put weight on her legs and use back brace for several months.
As one of the doctors said she is an "overachiever" she broke so many bones and survived, now she has to fight through the pain to get back on her feet.
Lets show Candace she has a team behind her. She will have expenses from hospital stay in ICU, rehabilitation center, home care and traveling to her appointments. Any help is greatly appreciated.
