Hello Friends,
My name is Shannon McGough, writing on behalf of my son Cannon McGough. Thank you for taking the time to read his story and care so much for his cause. I will continue to update as we make our way through his treatment.
On November 29, 2022, Cannon was diagnosed with Stage 4 Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. (For pediatrics, stage 4 means that it has spread from one central location) In addition to the large mass in his jaw/sinus area, there are two small spots in his lungs. This type “embryno” is considered the easier to treat of the two rhabdo types.
Cannon's oncology team at Children’s and the consulting pediatric oncologist at MD Anderson agree that immediate chemotherapy treatment is the best course of action to begin shrinking the tumors. Chemo is known to work quickly on this type of cancer, and we hope to have Cannon an unobstructed airway and vent-free within the days to come.
Cannon will complete his second dose of chemo Wednesday, December 7. His entire course of treatment is expected to last approx 12 months. Please pray that the Doctors see rapid tumor size reduction so that Cannon can be removed from the vent and moved down to the Oncology floor. Right now, he is breathing independently, and the vent is “just in case.”
He is in good spirits and shows us that the Cannon we know and love is still in the game. He is such a big boy about not pulling tubes and working to communicate with us every chance he gets. He lights up when his sisters come to visit, has an occasional eye roll for mom and has learned to write on a whiteboard to keep the nurses at his beck and call.
The family will continue to update Cannon's status via the Caring Bridge link below.
If you would like to support Cannon McGough in his fight against cancer, please consider purchasing a Cannon’s Crew shirt. The money raised through the sale of these shirts will help support the McGough family with all of the expenses that accompany a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. We want Cannon to know that we are with him as he fights this disease and that we are all part of Cannon’s Crew!
