Capital Campaign for HSV Treatment and Prevention

Herpes Cure Advocacy is a grassroots, membership-based advocacy organization with the goal of treatment and prevention for Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2.

There are more than half a million new cases of genital herpes annually in the US and yet there is no accurate test to diagnose asymptomatic infection. 85% of Herpes transmission is from primarily asymptomatic individuals who are undiagnosed and unaware they have the infection.

Currently available antiviral treatments (AVTs) are only moderately effective for those living with herpes and do not work for all. AVTs reduce symptoms by 70% and transmission by 50%. There have been no treatment improvements for herpes since AVTs were invented nearly 40 years ago.

There is no cure for herpes simplex and once infected the infection lives in the nervous system for life. 1 in 2 Americans has HSV-1. 1 in 9 Americans has HSV-2. The infection primarily impacts women and racial inequities in healthcare have led to nearly half of Black women in America having genital herpes. 5% of the world's population will have a minimum of one outbreak of genital herpes a year.

Beyond episodes of oral or genital lesions, there is additional potential for serious health concerns and advocates suggest medical knowledge of the epidemiological impacts of the infection is not complete. Serious health outcomes can include severe disease in immunocompromised, encephalitis, neonatal herpes, and potential for neurological complications. HSV-1 is currently being studied for association with Alzheimer's Disease. Neonatal herpes causes approximately 1,000 infant deaths annually.

Funds raised will support efforts to lobby the federal government for federal action, public and media relations to raise public awareness, and put pressure on stakeholders, marketing, and communications.
