My name is Omotara and I am a Black non-binary college student looking to buy a car. I am taking this measure as a step towards financial independence and finally leaving my abusive household.
Next month, I’m starting therapy after years of holding off because my African family does not believe in the practice of mental health rehabilitation and is fiercely religious. Since formulating my own thoughts and navigating through my identities, I’ve been subject to homophobic comments, beratement, threats, and made to feel as though I have no control over any part of my life. Each time I stand up for myself, I’m made to feel as though I’m ungrateful for being treated less than the bare minimum. I’ve attempted to get my family to see my side of things, but I’m done with centering my life around those who see me as someone to emotionally and verbally take their abuse out on.
Given limited choices and lack of certainty and safety measures from my university before school resumes next month, I had to withdraw from my housing status, leaving me to once again forego my mental health and continue to live in an abusive household simply to avoid adding more student debt to my name.
Within the past few weeks, I’ve applied for several job openings and have a few interviews lined up. I currently have an on-campus job but am looking to work part-time while taking classes to get out of the house as much as possible and save towards moving out. I do not want to rely on any family to get this car and have that be another thing that is held over me.
