As some of you know, Cara was diagnosed last year with a rare form of cancer called Ocular Melanoma. She received radiation therapy in her right eye along with laser treatment and we thought everything was going to be ok.
It wasn't.
During a checkup scan this past July, her doctor found that the cancer had metastasized to her liver and that she now has stage IV cancer. She was put on a clinical trial of cutting edge immunotherapy drugs. During treatment Cara continued to train for and run her third marathon, which is an amazing feat on its own. Again we were hoping for the best, but after the trial was over, they found that the cancer had grown in her liver and now has spread to her lungs.
Now we are trying to find the next best treatment option. Cara is currently in Texas at the MD Anderson Clinic, meeting with one of the few oncologists in the country that specialize in this rare disease.
Those of you that know Cara know that she is a fighter and we are going to fight this tooth and nail. Cara's friends will attest that she is the most giving and loyal person you could know. When Cara wants something she makes a plan, follows through and achieves her goals. Five years ago she started a "couch to 5K" running program and now she is a marathoner. Everyday I get to spend with Cara I feel as though I've won the lottery, she is truly beautiful inside and out.
We have received amazing support from friends and family and we are truly grateful for everyone in our lives. In this next phase, we are facing the added cost of traveling to get second opinions and treatments in other parts of the country. We are also trying to enjoy every day to its fullest while planning for the future.
We have always tried to support ourselves through this but now realize these added expenses are more than the two of us can manage. If you can and would like to help us, we would be so grateful.
