Care for Alex in the Fight Against Osteosarcoma

Alex Lombardi, my cousin and one of my first friends, has always been known for his bold jest & joy. From family dance-offs to outrageous stories, Alex effortlessly brightens us with his vitality.

Alex started having neck pains in June, and after CT scans and X-rays in the subsequent months, was falsely reassured that it was nothing serious. When his pain worsened and was experiencing severe weakness, his parents took him to the emergency room in Boston, Ma., where they discovered the horrendous news.

On October 31, 2022, a large cancerous tumor was found on Alex's cervical spine. This rare type of bone cancer is known as Osteosarcoma. Alex required emergent surgery to release pressure off his spinal cord as the tumor had wrapped around his vertebrae.

A large tumor is tough. A large tumor on the spine, as you may imagine, is a compounded challenge. Over the past several months, Alex has endured chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery -- all while maintaining the bright tenacity we all know & love.

During a two-day surgery on February 8 & 9, miraculous healthcare workers removed as much of the tumor as possible and stabilized his neck in the front and back. Alex's big smile hours after surgery inspires us all. As Mother Teresa said, "Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls."

While the surgery was considered a success by the doctors, Alex and the family still have a long road of radiation, chemo and physical therapy ahead. While Alex does have health insurance, he has already incurred several thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket expenses, and there are certainly more expenses ahead.
