WHO
Are we?
Bashiie is an activist/producer/ writer and cultural creator
Parishma is a law student, poet, artists and activist
Together we created care to culture to dismantle the structural and racist barriers within arts organisations and cultural spaces that disproportionately affect black and brown artists, young people in and leaving the care system and young people in the criminal justice system.
WHAT
Through this we are want to open a new campaign called #willyoulistennow? A commissioning festival aiming to promote the voices of black and brown artists through a white lense.
We will commission 12 *black and brown artists over the course of three months to produce audio visual work that expresses racism they have faced in the UK
**White artists will donate their talent and perform these pieces as if they were their own story
*black and brown consists of Black,Mixed Race,Asian, South East Asian, Latinx, and Indeginous people/ minority groups - this does not include White british or other groups
**This does mean white artists will not be paid for their performance but will be paid for further discussions
The aim: to shed light on the direct effect of modern day racism
WHY
- Because when George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were killed nobody listened until there were riots.
- Because when the riots happened the performative behaviour of organisations and individuals directly impacted the black community.
- Because when the lives of Black and Brown people were trendy, only then did people want to ‘learn’ about racism.
- Because black and brown people have been arguing that racism exists and are only listened to during times of mass outrage, trauma or when white people are talking
Because Care to Culture is tired of trauma being used and not heard. As a Black Care Leaver and a Brown Queer person we know what its like to be ignored and our allies haven’t been afraid to speak out for us.
Because we aren’t afraid to shout. And neither are our Allies.
So are you afraid to listen or:
Will you listen now?
To the people who look like you?
WHAT
Will this do?
- This will help take the responsibility of sharing trauma off of Black and Brown artists, and allow allies to platform their stories.
- Will give organisations and individuals a space and time to listen without guilt
- Will bring attention to the collective and individual plight of the Black and Brown British experience
- Will highlight the systemic and systematic racism faced daily in 2020 by Black and Brown Individuals
- Will allow Black and Brown people to hold organisations and individuals accountable for their actions with no fear of consequence.
HOW
Will your donation help?
-Covering the cost of the our time to plan and deliver the project
- Commissioning artists and funding pastoral or practical support they might need to be part of the project
-Creating and disseminating resource packs on anti-racism
-Funding a learning event that brings together artists, decision makers, the public and others to gather and share learning from the project to ensure it’s wide-ranging impact
We really need funds to turn our idea and passion for this transformational project into a reality, but know that lots of people reading this might have other things to offer! If you can’t donate but feel like you have something to add to our campaign - through advice, access to venues or other resources, please contact: [email redacted]
