Caring for Kim Brinson

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.”                                                                                                                       ~Isaiah 43:1
This is the journey of our  sweet friend.

KIM BRINSON – cancer fighter extraordinaire

Without being dramatic, she is in a fight for her life and although she has insurance, the costs of the out-of-pocket expenses, traveling to get treatment, any supplements etc., are very costly.  I asked what she needed and she and Mike struggled to ask for and accept help.  Let’s show them how much they are loved and treasured.  This is an ongoing expense – let’s blow them away.

April Fool’s Day, 2014 … her life changed.  Diagnosis:  advanced ovarian cancer.

The unknown loomed large, and the fear was great, yet she knew that her God, her family and her friends, would walk beside her every step of the way.

Kim was lead to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Zion, Illinois.  Alternative care is very important to her and they offer integrative care (caring for the mind and body with traditional medicine and alternative therapies).

October 2014 - Kim completed 6 months of chemo.  She did lose her beautiful hair, but remained “healthy” and did not get sick from the treatment.  Although she was able to work, she was limited due to risk of infection.

September 2015. For almost a year she was cancer-free. Kim and her daughter were scheduled to go to NYC… … but Kim was having some odd, very deep, pain in her abdomen.
Scans revealed the cancer had returned … and spread.

In Kim’s words, “So, this is where I now stand, in the midst of the second largest battle of my life:  a battle for my life.  I am not afraid to die; it is just that I don’t want to!  God has given us many promises, but He never says our lives will be free from trials or pain; in fact, He prepares us for those very things when He says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

They face many unknowns.  Many of Kim’s medical expenses are covered by insurance; however, some are not. It does not pay for Mike, or anyone else, to accompany her to Zion. Her insurance also does not cover the integrative care. Western medicine has a very low success rate in treating ovarian cancer.  If chemo doesn’t work this time, they may be forced to alternatives that are not covered by insurance.

Some say it takes three things to beat cancer – a strong will, a huge support network and funds. Kim is the strongest, most positive person.

This fund is intended to help offset what has turned out to be a very costly battle against this cancer. In a world where insurance coverage exceptions and high deductibles can bankrupt families, we want to help cover the cost of whatever we can. This will allow Kim and Mike to focus 100% of their energy on getting her better.
