Carl, “Strongman” Demonstrating his Namesake

Donation protected
In mid-May 2020, at just eighteen months old, Carl Malcolm Slobod, my wonderful grandson went to his pediatrician for a regular check-up. The doctor called his parents, my son and his wife (Luke and Rachael) alarmed that Carl’s platelets were critically low. Weeks later, post bone biopsy, the clinic discovered my precious first grandson had Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a type of cancer. My dear son Luke called me devastated with the news Carl would be needing chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Calgary Children’s Hospital. Several weeks later they received additional, heartbreaking news, Carl had developed AML Leukemia. Chemotherapy treatment started immediately at the Edmonton Stollery Children’s Hospital.

My daughter-in-law Rachael, at this time, was pregnant and due with Carl’s baby brother in a few short weeks. My son Luke kept working while doing shifts at the hospital, along with his wife Rachael, and Rachael’s mother. Due to COVID, only the three are allowed to stay with Carl.

Placing additional stress upon their lives during this traumatic time, their basement flooded twice, causing their bedroom and downstairs to be irreparably damaged. The contractors discovered a crack in the foundation and repairs need to be done. Lastly, it was discovered they have mold and mildew. This raises serious concerns over Carl’s return from Calgary, with a compromised immune system post chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow stem cell transplant.

This bill has now amounted to over $20,000.00! Rachael is a junior high school teacher currently on maternity leave while Luke works as a sales rep. When not at the hospital, Luke is sleeping on an air mattress on the living room floor while ½ their house is being torn apart.

Carl will be going to The Calgary Children’s Hospital mid-September. To place additional burden on this wonderful family now of four, they need to access an AirBnB with Rachael’s mom and stay for 2-3 months while Carl is recovering post stem cell transplant. This will put them even further in debt.

Requesting assistance to help this dedicated, loving family financially – any amount is so greatly helpful! Carl is truly his namesake as he has now completed two chemotherapy sessions and maintains his sparkling and charming personality. He demonstrates a courageous, undefeatable will at the age of just twenty months. We have every confidence that he will prove to be a “Strongman” for whom he was so aptly named.

See him run!
