My father, Carlos, a hardworking field worker for over 30 years, recently and unexpectedly faced a life-threatening heart attack and underwent an emergency triple bypass surgery on May 15th. Now, as he begins the long road to recovery, we kindly seek your support to alleviate the financial burden on his household and ensure his well-being.

Carlos's health scare has left us facing significant medical expenses and uncertainty about the future. He was in the ICU for nearly 10 days following his surgery and reliant on an artificial heart machine for almost 5 days due to dangerously low heart function. His prolonged ordeal in the hospital was much longer than typical for heart surgery patients, and his prognosis was not very good in the first several days post-surgery. However, almost miraculously on his 5th day in the hospital, surrounded by his family, he began to make a turnaround. This is a testament to his faith and his will to survive, and we are incredibly fortunate to still have him with us.

Carlos has always been the foundation of our family. He is a man of unwavering dedication to his work and his loved ones. A man of generous nature and integrity. His strength and resilience are truly inspiring. Even on the day of his heart attack, he was up at 4 AM to work tirelessly in the fields, as he does every day, to provide for his household. This health crisis has deeply impacted our lives, but his indomitable spirit and faith continue to give us hope.

Why We Need Your Help

The costs associated with my father's surgery, hospitalization, and ongoing medical care are overwhelming. Here are some specific details about the financial burden our parents are facing:

Surgery and Hospitalization: The triple bypass surgery and ICU stay have resulted in substantial medical bills. As a fieldworker, my father relies almost exclusively on Medicare and government-funded programs for his medical needs. These programs often do not cover treatments that are not deemed absolutely essential, placing a heavy burden on our family to make up the difference. This also places a heavy burden on our mother, who is a senior and our father’s tireless advocate.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation: Carlos needs extensive rehabilitation and therapy to aid in his recovery. He will begin this rehab soon, which typically lasts around 3 months but could vary.

Ongoing Treatments and Medications: Regular follow-up appointments and lifelong medications are necessary to monitor and support his heart health.

Home Modifications or New Housing: Our parents live in a small travel trailer that will either need to be retrofitted to suit his recovery needs or potentially replaced with a newer, more suitable one. Our parents wish to maintain their independence as long as they can, and your support can help make this possible.

Forced Early Retirement: Carlos will be forced to retire due to his health condition, further straining the household's finances. He had hoped to continue working to earn his maximum retirement benefits under SSI, but this event has disrupted those plans, leaving our parents with less financial stability.
