“Yes Massive!”  -  Carlos "Culture"  Torres

Carlos was originally from Medellin, Columbia.  He was a music guru, a father, husband, son, brother, mentor, promoter, DJ, MC and a school teacher.  He was a fighter for reggae music for the people.   He carried with him the essence of love.

He has worked with all the major music venues including the World Beat Center, Belly Up Tavern, Winstons, The Music Box, The Holding  Company and several others to name a few.   His tenor over 30 years included greater San Diego residencies and gigs at various music venues, radio stations and music festivals across the state.  He was the pioneer of radio airwaves of San Diego's 91x Reggae Makossa alongside Makeda Dread.

For over a decade he helped make Ocean Beach a hub for reggae music nationwide with his 10 years +  tradition with reggae night "Club Kingston" every Wednesday at Winstons .

He provided an outlet for touring bands and solo artists alike and always gave them a proper introduction.

The thing about Carlos that we will always take with us was his smile.  Smiling is contagious and he knew it from the bottom of his heart.  His love for music and the people will always be remembered.   His love for his daughters was genuine.

He loved Sequoia and Coral so much!

Always let everyone have their time...

Carlos helped thousands of bands, promoters, photographers, videographers, dancers, DJ's and artists alike over his 3 decades in the music industry.

He truly loved spinning reggae music and sharing positive vibes!

Always a smile on his face...

Please help share this GOFUNDME so the world can help his family heal and to raise funds for his funeral costs and the girls.  The greatest gift you could give is sharing his story.  Blessings!

Here are just a few quotes from folks in the industry he impacted:

"Carlos was a brother and friend to everyone. Always gentle, kind and humble. No ego or fakeness, just a genuinely good Soul. Yes, Carlos Culture was Consistent in many things, like his big beautiful smile, his lighthearted laughter, his political posts, his passion for good reggae music and his love for humanity. Good people like Carlos don’t die and Rest In Peace, they Graduate and Rise In Peace. I look forward to seeing my brother again and continuing our journey together in the future Worlds of Light and Life. ❤️" - Pato Banton

"Always noticeable by his contagious smile, we lost a staple in the San Diego music scene yesterday. Carlos Torres, better known as Carlos Culture, has been DJ'ing here every Reggae Wednesday night for decades. From the stage, dance floor and airwaves he has been a true ambassador to the World Reggae scene. We have truly lost a legend and feel blessed to have known such a light. Our hearts are hurting." - Ted Wigler / Winstons Ocean Beach

"Rest In Power to our brother Dj Carlos Culture. Shocked and saddened to hear of your passing today. Thanks for all the much needed love and light you brought to this world. You are the salt of this earth, and will be truly missed, but never forgotten brother. All our love and prayers going out to you and your family. " - Slightly Stoopid

“Carlos was the glue that bound us all together. His shoes will be impossible to fill. We are all at a terrible loss.”
- Scott Clayton / On Point Promotions/New Leaf Band

"I was lucky to work with Carlos at 91X when our shows Loudspeaker/Reggae Makossa were back to back around 2003. He was always the first to arrive and he would be excited to be supporting the local Reggae community through his passion of it. He will be sorely missed and has left a huge hole..." - Tim Pyles / 91X San Diego

"“Reggae music brought us all together and made us a family!” - Dash Eye / Tribe of Kings

"Carlos Culture was one of our earliest supporters in the San Diego reggae circuit. When we were a fledgling brand out of the San Francisco Bay Area in 2013, Carlos would give us a public shoutout any time he could. That was his calling — the role of supporter." - Kristy Rose / Top Shelf Music :  In memoriam of DJ Carlos Culture

"Carlos Culture was a larger than life individual who exuded ONE LOVE. Every time we saw each other, he would make me feel like a Rockstar and give me a shoutout on the mic no matter how big or small the gig he was spinning. He was always supportive, welcoming, warm and inspiring. " - Anthony Williams / IRIESIDE

"Carlos was a beacon of light & positivity anchored by his love for his family, community & reggae music. He inspired everyone around him to share the same joy & gratitude for those blessings." - Mike Patti / The Pier Magazine

"When I got a chance to meet “DJ CARLOS” he made me feel inspired to jump on the stage and pumped he played our music in his mix because he is a legend. DJ Carlos was always there seeing the newcomers in reggae artists as well as legendary artists and giving inspiring words of joy for the music as a legacy we leave behind but never forgotten. He will be missed and never forgotten in our Fortunate Family. Big love to his family" - Dan Kelly / Fortunate Youth

"Carlos never failed to greet me with a huge smile and ask about how the boys and I were doing. He was at almost all of our shows supporting. The sky shines a little less bright today. RIP Carlos!" - Evan Hawkins / Through The Roots.

“Carlos was always full of energy and the happiness that came from was always genuine.  No matter how hard of a night I was having, I knew when I saw him it was going to be a great night. “ - Bryan Harding / Bryan Harding Illustrations

"Carlos was just such a positive person in the music community and always helped support us from day one,  you know showed interest in helping up-and-coming bands and if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have a lot of plays in San Diego in our early day, so we really are grateful for you Carlos.  Rest in peace brother, we love you and see you on the other side when life is a mission and love is a message”. - Moi / Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds

"Carlos Culture:  When you find someone in life who fully loves what he or she does, you can’t help but have admiration for them. Carlos Culture loved Reggae Music. He made you love reggae music. He felt the music he’d spin and shared that passion with crowds everywhere. He took pride in his work, and opened doors for countless bands to play great shows in San Diego for those crowds who were excited about the music that he was a champion of. He did all this with grace and a million dollar smile. I thank him for sharing his passion with me, as well as our conversations on family life. Rest Easy DJ Carlos Culture, you were a real one". - Mike Pinto / Musician
